Meta Platforms Inc. announced the launch of the Llama API on April 29, 2025, during its first LlamaCon AI developer conference.
The API enables developers to create applications using Meta’s Llama AI models, starting with Llama 3.3 8B. It offers tools for fine-tuning, training, and evaluating the AI models.
Meta built this API to encourage innovation and maintain its position in the competitive AI model market.
About the Llama API
The Llama API provides developers with software tools to easily build and test AI applications based on Llama models. It supports generating custom data, training models on that data, and assessing their quality through Meta’s evaluation suite.

Meta emphasized that it will not use any customer data from the Llama API to train its own AI models. Additionally, models created with the API can be moved to other hosting platforms if desired.
Meta has partnered with technology companies Cerebras and Groq to offer model-serving options. These experimental options are available upon request and aim to simplify prototyping for developers working on Llama 4 models.
Significance and Availability
The API release is part of Meta’s strategy to expand its Llama ecosystem, which has achieved more than a billion downloads to date. This move helps Meta compete with rivals like DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen in the open AI space.
The Llama API is currently accessible via limited preview. Meta plans to increase availability in the next weeks and months to support a broader developer community.
Developer Tools and Support
Alongside the API, Meta offers software development kits (SDKs) to facilitate building AI-driven services with Llama models. The API centralizes usage tracking and aims for a streamlined user experience. Meta intends to add more partnerships to enhance developer options soon.
