Freepik announced the release of F Lite, a new AI image model trained exclusively on commercially licensed, safe-for-work images.
The model was developed in partnership with Fal.ai. It aims to address copyright concerns in generative AI by using only legally licensed data.
F Lite includes two versions: standard and texture, designed to offer different levels of output quality and creativity.
Details of F Lite Model
F Lite contains about 10 billion parameters, trained on a dataset of roughly 80 million licensed images, using 64 Nvidia H100 GPUs over two months. The standard version provides more predictable and accurate image generation based on prompts. The texture variant delivers richer textures and more artistic compositions but may produce more errors.
- Model parameters: ~10 billion
- Training dataset: 80 million licensed images
- Training duration: Two months
- Hardware: 64 Nvidia H100 GPUs
Significance in AI Copyright Landscape
Generative AI models have faced numerous legal challenges regarding the use of copyrighted material for training. Freepik’s approach with F Lite seeks to reduce these risks by relying only on licensed content. This effort comes amid lawsuits involving companies such as OpenAI and Midjourney.
Freepik’s move supports ethical AI development by providing an open model that developers can improve and adapt. Offering F Lite with accessible licensing may prompt wider adoption of legally compliant AI tools.
About the Collaboration
The AI startup Fal.ai partnered with Freepik to develop F Lite, combining expertise and resources. The model requires substantial computing power, needing GPUs with at least 24GB VRAM for execution.
F Lite joins a growing group of AI models focused on licensed data, alongside initiatives by companies like Adobe, Getty Images, and Bria. The availability of such models may influence the future market for generative AI solutions.
