AllTrails launches $80 AI-powered Peak membership for enhanced trail experiences

AllTrails has launched a new premium membership called “Peak” for $80 a year. This tier offers AI-driven features to improve hiking and biking experiences.

It includes AI-powered smart routing, real-time trail forecasts, trail traffic heatmaps, and a plant identification tool.

The “Peak” membership will first be available to selected users before a global rollout in June. Outdoor enthusiasts can sign up for early access on the AllTrails website. The app is further expanding its technology to personalize outdoor activities.

Key Features of the “Peak” Membership

  • AI-Powered Smart Routes: Customize trails by making them shorter, less steep, or more scenic using AI tools.
  • Real-Time Trail Condition Forecasts: Get updates on temperature, precipitation, snow depth, air quality, and mosquito activity.
  • Trail Traffic Heatmaps: View trail popularity data sourced from millions of users to choose crowded or quiet routes.
  • Outdoor Lens: Identify trees, plants, and flowers via smartphone camera, with plans for more features later.

Significance and Industry Context

AllTrails aims to enhance outdoor experiences by integrating advanced AI and real-time data. This strategy responds to rising competition, especially from Apple Maps.

In 2024, Apple added topographic maps and hiking features to its app, providing offline access and detailed trail information. This move entered a market once dominated by specialized apps like AllTrails.

AllTrails’ commitment to innovation is shown by its largest update since 2010, which included curated collections and improved trail pages. This follows a significant growth round of $150 million in 2021 during a surge in outdoor interest.

How This Development Came About

AllTrails leveraged data and machine learning to build tools that adapt to user preferences and live trail conditions. This enhances the app’s utility and user engagement.

The company has also updated its Base and Plus memberships. Base remains free with essential features, while Plus offers offline maps and live trail sharing.

The addition of the Points of Interest feature provides over 500,000 mapped landmarks and amenities. Plus subscribers gain the ability to download customized offline areas.
